Affordable Cold Air Essential Oil Diffuser

Recently I made the determination that I needed to diffuse some essential oils in my house for therapeutic purposes (mainly thieves oil, an oil with a funny name and an interesting story).  An aromatherapist told me that the diffuser must be a cold air diffuser and recommended a good one—at around $200!  Another knowledgeable friend recommended one in the $120 range.  There was no way I was going to pay that much for a diffuser when I am just beginning!  After a lot of research I found  the Spa Scenter diffuser by Hubmar for $35 on Amazon.  All in all I’m very pleased.  It’s easy to use and clean, it takes up a small amount of space, and it runs quietly.

Is it the best diffuser available?  Probably not.  But it meets my needs as I begin to learn about essential oils and how to diffuse them.  I’m sharing this because I imagine that I am not the only one who is hesitant to begin diffusing oils because of the prohibitive cost.

I ordered most of my essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs and mixed my own thieves oil, which was much more affordable than buying thieves premixed.  I understand that Young Living essential oils are supposed to be the purest oils and they seem to have a corner on the essential oils market.  I don’t know if they are actually that much better than those from Mountain Rose.  Maybe they are; I have no way of knowing. I do know that Mountain Rose is a reputable company and I felt comfortable purchasing from them.  I will continue to use these oils unless I find out that they are unsafe.  So far I have been happy.

Do any of you use essential oils?  Any tips for getting started?

  1. Mt. Rose is great. I used lavender and lemon essential oil like crazy in our house so I often buy from Liberty Naturals in bulk to help keep some of the costs down. If you haven’t picked up Valerie Worwood’s Book The complete Guide to Essential Oils I would highly recommend it.

  2. No, I haven’t! Thanks, I will have to pick it up!

  3. What size of room does this diffuser cover? The product description on Amazon does not state coverage.

  4. I am not sure, Shanna. Sorry.

  5. Check out doTerra essential oils. They have surpassed the purity and the issue of topical use only that Young Living has and now their sales. Any questions email me at

  6. If you are using essential oils for therapeutic reasons then you need to have E.O.B.B.D certified oils.

  7. I just bought edens gardens essential oils from amazon. Do any of you know if that is a good one? I am going to use them for natural healing and household cleaning. Thanks

  8. There are a lot of essential oils companies, and most common people won’t be able to tell the difference until they try something that doesn’t work. A French Medical doctor who routinely prescribes essential oils once told me, “I would rather have one drop of high quality essential oils than a whole drum of poor quality.” I know that Young Living and DoTerra are both huge companies and they source their oils in large quantities from wherever they can get them all over the world, because they need large quantities. This does not mean high quality. I offer oils at prices that are half what the network marketing companies are, because I can shop around and source oils from smaller suppliers with an attention to higher quality.

  9. Bill Fifield, what company do you order from?

  10. doTERRA essential oils are 100% pure! They smell the best and have all the medicinal properties intact to give you all the wonderful benefits. Visit and check out their amazing products. I use them and they are Not low quality! They are potent and do exactly what they are supposed to. LOVE doTERRA!
