Favorite Baby Item: Arm’s Reach Co-sleeper

I wrote this little review right after Grace was born. There’s nothing in it for me–This co-sleeper is just a product I’ve found incredibly helpful.

What are your favorite baby products? Is there anything that you find really indispensable?

This is the Arm’s Reach Co-sleeper we got for our sweet new baby, Grace. I am loving it! I’ve tried just about every newborn sleeping arrangement from bassinet to pack and play to crib to full co-sleeping and none of it worked for me. This was recommended by a pediatric nurse friend, and it’s perfect. Grace is right next to me, so I can keep a close eye on her, pick her up easily (without getting out of bed), and during nursing times I don’t have to worry about dozing off and dropping her. That’s always been a big fear. The sleeper actually straps to the bed between the mattress and box springs for a nice tight fit.

She loves to sleep in my arms, but she also does really well in the co-sleeper with her foam wedges and a good swaddle. The nurses at the hospital showed me how they wrap the babies, and while I haven’t perfected their burrito swaddle, I can get her snug enough that she feels secure and sleeps well. This is my first success with getting baby to sleep on her back. I think the swaddle has something to do with it.

In any case, I wholeheartedly recommend the co-sleeper. It’s kinda pricey and at first I thought we had just bought a really expensive pack and play…It’s a lot more than that, though.

The only drawback I can think of is that it’s a bit harder for me to get in and out of bed. I have to get in from the end. However, that’s a small price to pay for a good night’s sleep!

  1. Wow, that co-sleeper looks great! Where can I get one?

I recommend the Graco Safari Swing. It is great for when I have things to do around the house or even when I need 10 mins to take a shower. It took Josh a couple times to get used to it, but now he really loves it…but it has to be on the highest speed, for him anyway. You can get it at Target for just at $100, also a little pricey, but so worth it.

  2. Ah…what a wonderful invention. When I was pregger’s w/ Ainsley, my gal-pal at work told me I had to have it, so she sent her’s over (her son had outgrown it.) Whoa…boy, she wasn’t joking. I have recommended to many people, however, no one believes me that it’s worth the money, and in more urban areas (my kids were born in Annapolis/Baltimore) you have the luxury of craigslist (dotcom), which is a blessing for the budget-minded. I kept her co-sleeper for both girls, then returned, unscathed, since I never used the playpen feature. Strictly co-sleeping in peace and quiet. I totally agree with you. A must have!

  3. A couple of my other ‘wouldn’t want to live without’s…’

Cradle swing (newborn thru about 1 year for my kids…)
Bumbo seat (3-6 months for my kids)
Jumperoo (around 4 or 5 months thru starting to walk for my kids)

I bought all used from yard sales or craigslist (dotcom) in Maryland, for next to nothing, and passed them along as the time was right. Just absolute luxury items for many households due to expense of new items, but I was BLESSED doubly to have these items so readily available when I was getting ready for my kids.

When I say ‘luxury items,’ I merely mean that I lump life, including child rearing, into two categories…practical and luxury. Practical is anything that double duties, is efficient and cheap…like a pack and play. You almost HAVE TO have one (almost, only cuz I know families who have done without because there was no money for a pack/play…) However, a cradle swing…well…you don’t NEED IT, probably don’t HAVE TO HAVE IT, and definitely won’t KILL FOR ONE…but, man, let me tell you, if you can find one for $25 (or less), it’s worth it. And so are the batteries, which tended to last me 2 or 3 months per set (no automatic mobile on mine, which eats batteries, so I hear…). Same w/ bumbo seat and jumperoo…good way to free up hands for a few minutes. Bumbo sits on table at restaurant and baby makes great centerpiece/conversation piece…Jumperoo is lightyears betters than a walker or doorway jumper, but pricey, so look early and look often (or let all your friends know you need one!!!) I have alot more sanity because of these three items.

Now, this might be another blog for another time Steph, but, getting my husband to buy off on ‘used’ items for his ‘child’ was tough at first, but, he caught on soon.

I hope you enjoy my babbling!
